Cinema has graced us with some of the most inspiring female role models imaginable, from Scarlett O'Hara to Katniss Everdeen, they have pioneered, inspired and empowered us, while taking us on some amazing adventures. To celebrate International Women’s Day 2019, Wide Eye Media invited our partners and clients to vote for their favourite Strong Woman of the Silver Screen.
A short-list of five candidates was compiled and the winning heroine was revealed at a surprise screening in the Odeon Point Village which took place on 7th March, on the eve of International Women's Day. The event also featured a special guest speaker, Max Brady of Pull the Trigger.
These were the top five movie heroines as voted for by our guests: Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in Alien, Taraji P Henson as Kathrine Johnson in Hidden Figures and finally, Julia Roberts made the list twice for both Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman and her role as Erin Brockovich.
Former Union of Students in Ireland (USI) President and political activist, Max Brady of Pull the Trigger Productions, gave an insightful and powerful speech. This highlighted the dangerous stereotypes, both past and present, in the media and the world of advertising, and the challenges faced for a more diverse representation of women. Max also emphasised the need for change and a called for a more honest portrayal of men and women in advertising.
After Max Brady's excellent presentation, the favourite Strong Woman of the Silver Screen was revealed. The winning film began to play, accompanied by an extremely enthusiastic response from a delighted audience as they realised Erin Brockovich was the mystery movie. Strong, tough and resilient, this character and her story were based on incredible true events - we can't think of a more perfect heroine to mark International Women’s Day 2019.
Wide Eye Media would like to thank everyone who came along to our Strong Women of the Silver Screen event and helped us celebrate International Women’s Day.
