Hello Big Screen!

2022 has allowed cinemas to reopen without capacity restrictions and to build upon the remarkable pace of return from Autumn 2021. As that year closed No Time To Die became the #1 BOND FILM OF ALL TIME AT THE BOX OFFICE IN THE REPUBLIC of IRELAND and on the ISLAND of IRELAND. This achievement during social distancing and capacity restrictions in cinemas, was extraordinary.

The pull of the big screen, surround-sound, cinema-going experience has quickly driven people away from their sofas, with cinematic releases shaping our culture because of the associated buzz. Excellent openings and footfall across The Batman, Sing 2, Spiderman: No Way Home, Uncharted and Belfast, result in these topping the box office year to date. Meanwhile cinema advertising sales are edging towards pre-pandemic levels. Core’s latest investment forecast shows an increase in Cinema advertising by +68% in ROI in 2021 - set to grow again this year by +82%.

There are interesting opportunities for advertisers to grasp on-screen whether in-reel or sponsoring seasonal line-ups at the cinema. The forthcoming movie slate features fresh takes on popular properties and anticipated follow-ups to some of the most critically acclaimed films of all-time. Here are some highlights for the rest of the year.

JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION wraps the ‘World’ trilogy, adding original Jurassic Park actors Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, and Laura Dern as supporting cast. Director Colin Trevarrow promises a ‘very satisfying’ ending for series fans.

LIGHTYEAR is a fresh take on the Toy Story character, serving as an origins tale during Buzz’s early days at Star Command. Starring Chris Evans, this Disney/Pixar production promises to bring audiences to infinity, and beyond.

Austin Butler was born to play ELVIS, pulling off the star’s look and mannerisms with ease. Set from the perspective of Presley’s manager, played by Tom Hanks, there’s a lot of buzz surrounding Baz Luhrmann’s latest biopic. It’s easy to imagine Elvis in conversation for next year’s Oscars.

The incomprehensible yellow Minions have become a symbol of frivolity and fun. MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU picks up where the story began, serving as a prequel to Despicable Me. With the original Minions taking the No.3 spot in ROI box offices in 2015, this is one to watch this Summer.

Following Get Out and Us, NOPE follows director Jordan Peele’s penchant for thematic horror. The trailer hints at nationalism and colonisation woven into a neo-western narrative. With not much known apart from its distinct setting, there’s an expectation Nope will continue Peele’s barrier-breaking direction exploring representation in Hollywood.

High-octane action and a star-studded cast make BULLET TRAIN unmissable. Brad Pitt stars as a retiring assassin on one last mission aboard the titular Japanese bullet train, but things go awry when he finds himself competing against other assassins for his target.

BLACK ADAM promises to be a more gritty, unadulterated antithesis to 2019’s Shazam. The film follows the Justice Society of America, led by Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate, as they attempt to stop the titular Black Adam from wreaking havoc on the world.

BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER is the sequel to the critically acclaimed of Black Panther. With mystery surrounding the plot, this is sure to garner a lot of attention when it releases this November.

If there was ever a candidate for ‘future guilty pleasure’, it’s TICKET TO PARADISE. When a divorced couple try to advise their daughter on romance, things don’t go to plan. Starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, this is a classic, feel-good rom-com in the making that harkens back to Just Go With It.

From West End to the big screen, this musical version of Roald Dahl’s classic has been a commercial and critical success since its debut, winning 12 awards. Starring Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull, MATILDA will pull in fans old and new when it hits cinemas this December.

When Avatar released in 2009, its quickly became the highest grossing film of the time.  Nobody knows quite what to expect from AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER but expect revolutionary performance capture and the cutting edge of production. Expect this to break records out of sheer intrigue and nostalgia.

With a host of others including Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Don't Worry Darling, & Thor: Love & Thunder to look forward to, 2022 is stacked!
